Here is a guide on how to plan and train for the Gatineau Loppet

The Gatineau Loppet is the premier cross-country ski event in Canada attracting thousands of participants to the beautiful slice of snowy heaven just outside of Ottawa. Thinking of taking the plunge? Here’s what you need to know.

Choosing the Right Race: Finding Your Nordic Niche
Embarking on your inaugural Gatineau Loppet, scheduled for Feb. 16-18 2024, necessitates a thoughtful decision regarding the race that best aligns with your skill level, aspirations, and the thrill you seek.

The Gatineau Loppet offers a range of distances, from the accessible 5k to the more challenging 50k, catering to both classical and freestyle styles. Your choice of race sets the tone for a unique winter experience, so choose one that not only excites but also pushes your boundaries, leaving you with a sense of accomplishment.

Steven Paradine is the chief of competition for the Gatineau Loppet, and he says cross-country skiing in general, and the Loppet specifically is open to a wide spectrum of participants.

“Cross-country skiing is kind of neat in that you can do it at a whole number of different levels,” he says. “You can do it as a recreational skier out there. There are a number of events where you can do it recreationally and not be trying to push yourself hard, and you can still complete it in reasonable time. But you can also push yourself right to the limits. Cross-country skiing is one of the hardest physical sports in the world in terms of the overall aerobic and physical effort required. So it's kind of neat that people can do that whole range.”

At the Gatineau Loppet, there are different waves for each event from the elite competitors at the first wave to the untimed participants who are just there to have a good time and complete the race.

Training Tips: Preparing for the Gatineau Loppet Challenge
Training is the backbone of a successful Gatineau Loppet journey. To navigate the diverse terrain of Gatineau Park with finesse, adopt a training regimen that combines endurance and intensity. Allocate approximately 80% of your training time to easy skiing allowing your body to adapt and build stamina. Balance this with hill repeats and interval training to challenge yourself and enhance your overall performance. A focused training period can significantly boost your confidence and prepare you for a Gatineau Loppet challenge.

“It's the same fundamentals of most endurance sports in that you do most of your effort at an easy level,” said Paradine.
“There’s people who have been doing this for their whole life going year-round for all of this, but you know, if you can spend at least some time on snow over the next two-and-a-half months, you can prepare yourself quite well in that period of time.”

Navigating Gatineau Park: Familiarizing Yourself with the Trails
Mastering the intricacies of Gatineau Park's trails is a critical aspect of your Gatineau Loppet preparation. Practice is key, particularly when it comes to navigating the many uphills and downhills on the course. Hone your skills in essential techniques such as the snow plough and step turns to navigate varied terrains with confidence. Acquaint yourself with the beauty of Gatineau Park's diverse landscapes, from dense forests to open trails, ensuring you're well-prepared for the challenges that the Gatineau Loppet course presents.

Paradine knows a thing or two about Gatineau Park. He grew up in Ottawa and has been skiing the trails for most of this life. During the pandemic, without any challenges close at hand, he decided to create one himself, and skied every single trail in the massive park, some 207 kilometres, over a 22-hour period.

“We lost all our races and all of our challenges. So a lot of us in the outdoor community made up our own,” he says. “And for me, it was the concept of can it be done and how to strategically do it?”

 Planning Your Loppet Weekend
A successful Gatineau Loppet experience goes beyond skiing prowess; meticulous planning is essential. From transportation arrangements to securing accommodations, make sure to plan well in advance to eliminate any last-minute stressors. Familiarize yourself with the race's logistics, including bib collection points and starting times, ensuring a smooth start to your Gatineau Loppet weekend.

By taking care of the logistics, you can focus on your performance and immerse yourself in the event's unique atmosphere.
Kit pickup is at a local school, Mont-Bleu High School. There will be first aid available, plenty of refuelling stations along the course and a post-race meal available. As well, a massage service is available for an additional charge.

There will be a ski waxing tent at the Gatineau Loppet and space for waxing at the hotel, as well. The Gatineau Loppet host hotel is the Best Western, and there are still rooms available. From the host hotel, participants can take the shuttle from the hotel to the site and back.

Soaking in the Experience: Beyond the Ski Trails
The Gatineau Loppet is not just a race; it's an immersive experience that extends beyond the ski trails. Engage with the vibrant international community of skiers, share stories with fellow enthusiasts, and celebrate your accomplishments at the finish line.
